In 1989 the Red Sox were scheduled to play Cincinnati, but a plane malfunction stranded the Reds in Montreal and the game was cancelled.

The Red Sox are 4-3 in Hall of Fame Games.
Baseball in Boston
The first major league team in Boston was the Boston Red Caps, who played in the inaugural National League season of 1876 and later became the Boston Braves.
Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912, the same day as Detroit's Navin Field, which later became Tiger Stadium.

From 1901 to 1952, Boston hosted two major league teams: the Red Sox (also known as the Americans and Somersets) and the Braves.
Modern fans know the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry as a one-sided affair, with New York having won 26 World Series titles while Boston suffered a drought from 1918 until 2004. But prior to 1921, the Red Sox were the more successful franchise, having won six of the first 18 American League pennants while New York finished no higher than second place. In a seven-year stretch (1912-1918), the Red Sox won four World Series titles behind stars Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Joe Wood, Babe Ruth, and Duffy Lewis
